Yoga is a practice that should be tailored to the individual, each person and each body is different and your practice needs to be set to your own liking.

Below is a brief summary of the types of yoga and how they are suited to particular needs. But remember there are modifications that can be used in each and sometimes yoga is simply guided by personal preference.

Hatha:

  • Good for beginners

  • Slow and Mindful movement

  • Individual Asanas

Vinyasa:

  • Fast paced

  • Flowing movement

  • Gets your heart pumping

Ashtanga:

  • Vinyasa style

  • Disciplined movement

  • Physically demanding

Kundalini:

  • Awakens latent energy

  • Asana, meditation, pranayama, chanting

  • Spiritual based

Bikram:

  • Sweaty detoxification

  • Set number of poses

  • Strict style

Iyengar:

  • Detailed and precise alignment

  • Slow movement

  • Use of props for support​

Yin:

  • Floor based 

  • Poses held for several minutes

  • Meditation

Restorative:

  • De stressing

  • Use of props for support

  • Blankets, scented oils, eye wraps
